One property management company, Osgoode Properties, calculated how much it typically would cost to furnish an apartment. Unfortunately their calculation only takes into account people who furnish their apartments with new furniture. Which as you can imagine is pretty expensive:

Bedroom

Bed and mattress: $274
Chest of drawers: $191
Drapes: $46
Rug: $183
Two lamps: $110
Bedroom Total: $804

Living Room

Sofa: $552
Armchair: $229
Coffee Table: $92
Drapes: $46
Rug: $183
Two lamps: $110
TV Stand: $92
Bedroom Total: $1,304
Cost of furnishing an apartment with new furniture: $2,108

Seeing as how I’m a person who does more thrift shopping than any sane man should I know we can be that number down, way down. Outside of vintage designer pieces furniture has no resell value. Its so bad people would rather abandon their property than take it with them when they move. So lets have a look at what furnishing an apartment with items bought from a thrift/charity shop/rummage/etc. might cost you:

Bedroom

Bed frame: $10
Mattress(never go used): $180
Chest of drawers: $15
Drapes: $5
Rug: $12
Two lamps: $8
Bedroom Total: $230

Living Room

Sofa: $20
Armchair: $15
Coffee Table: $10
Drapes: $5
Rug: $12
Two lamps: $8
TV Stand: $15
Bedroom Total: $75

Cleaning Supplies

Rent Steam Cleaner: $25
Misc. cleaning supplies: $15
Cleaning Supplies Total: $40
Cost of furnishing an apartment with gently used furniture: $345
Savings total: 84%

If you’ve never gone thrifting or only visit a single store every so often then you may think all they’ve got is ugly 1980s and 1990s furniture and decor. Which frankly couldn’t be further from the truth. Most living room items are either from the the early to mid-2000s or mid century modern. With a simple steam cleaning you can make that used couch newer than the ones in your parent’s house.
