Alright, this is one even I can’t church up. My sister lived in one of these for a while, and they’re exactly as you’d expect. Extremely cheap rent at the sacrifice of living in a place which probably violates every building code. My buddy’s mom bought one for their family to live in. The molding in the place is scrap wood, the ducts are just decoration on the floor, and the craftsmanship is generally something to be desired.

1Your Room – Basically a boarding house is a house that’s been divided haphazardly, and your room is genuinely just that, a room. Your carpeting and fixtures are the cheapest stuff dumpster diving can buy. Plus the old-school electric wiring usually makes the place a wireless dead zone.

2Community Area – As far as furnishings go they’re usually barren areas with a dusty plant and a broken card table. Generally speaking the kitchens usually aren’t very amazing, but you’re going to have at least one person in the place that likes to cook. There’s also going to be a guy who thinks everything labeled or not is up for grabs. If you really, really like something keep it in your room.

3The Roommates – You’re going to have a least one roommate who’s on parole. Because when you leave jail they give you like four-hundred dollars and tell you, “Make it work.” They usually end up in motels and boarding house because they’re cheap. Also, they usually make a deal with the landlord to do maintenance work or something like that. Before you move in get their names and look up their records. If someone has a violent past odds are they’re going back, but if it’s like a minor drug offense they’re probably alright. It’s gamble but all roommates are.

Did you know they’re also called: bachelor apartments, efficiencies, officetels, and studio flats?…
